One of the characteristics of a strong Jewish community is the presence of a Jewish day school, as an educational option for families seeking to provide their children with a deeper connection with their Jewish identity and a stronger foundation in Jewish learning.

With the steady growth of Jewish families moving into the Hudson County area, as the Hudson Gold Coast and surrounding areas continue to expand, we are increasingly confident that the timing is right to establish such a school in Hudson County. Creating such a school has been a long-time dream. Jewish educational options in Hudson County have significantly increased since the Kaplan Cooperative Preschool opened in 2000. Hudson County now has two Jewish preschools (Kaplan Cooperative Preschool at the United Synagogue of Hoboken, and My Little Gan at Chabad of Hoboken), as well as growing Hebrew school enrollments throughout the county. However, every year there are Jewish families who move away from our area, or do not consider moving to our area, because of the lack of a Jewish day school. There are also families who have made long-term commitments to our area who are unsatisfied with the current education options.

Our current initiative to create a Hudson County Jewish day school began in mid-2016. We are exploring both the possibility of establishing an independent school, and the possibility of being a satellite to an already existing Jewish day school in the New York/New Jersey area. We are considering potential locations in Jersey City for a school. In June, the JFNNJ arranged for a consultant from Prizmah, the Center for Jewish Day Schools ( to speak with interested Hudson County parents. Building upon the enthusiasm of that meeting which drew 20 participants, we formed our Steering Committee led by chairperson Joyce Boll.

Joyce has been a member of the Hudson County Jewish Community since 1995. As the Chair of the United Synagogue of Hoboken Fundraising Committee, she helped to set the state for the Jewish communal revival in Hoboken through the expansion of the USH building, which made the Kaplan Cooperative Preschool possible. Most recently, she co-chaired with Adam Weiss, the initiative to bring Lower Hudson County into the Jewish Federation of Northern New Jersey (JFNNJ). She sits on the newly established JFNNJ Hudson County Regional Council. Our steering committee consists of: Joyce Boll, Weehawken (Chair & Budget Leader), Rabbi Robert Scheinberg, Hoboken, Rachelle Grossman, Jersey City (Leader of Survey), Jonathan Marx, Weehawken (Leader of Recruiting/Marketing), Keren Vered, Jersey City (Leader of Fundraising), Rabbi Abe Unger, Hoboken (Leader of Curriculum), Tal Shuster, Jersey City, Inbal Zohar, Jersey City, Ofer Bechor, Weehawken, Offer Melnick, Weehawken, and Jenny Baras, Jersey City.
