As a young couple, it is important for us to feel the presence of a Jewish community – an inviting place for us to celebrate Shabbat from time to time and the holidays. We first arrived in Jersey City just before the High Holidays, and in our search for a place to celebrate, we were surprised to find long existing synagogues a short minibus ride or walk from our house. Thus far we have participated in services in Hoboken and in Jersey City. Our “regular” place of worship is Congregation Mount Sinai, where we have met a group of eclectic congregants including couples who we now call our friends. We have noticed lots of changes in Jersey City over the short time we have lived here. Although the waterfront sidewalk (boasting the best view of Manhattan) existed before we moved in, new luxury towers, galleries, stores and restaurants with outdoor seating pop up every day. The recent development has attracted thousands of young singles and families, among them Jews and Israelis. In fact, we are no longer surprised to hear Hebrew in the PATH station or at the supermarket, and an Israeli store recently opened just two blocks from our home. Come visit our wonderful community!
